Military Honours Fallen Recruit

Ateba Obara Narcisse died on May 23, 2013 in Niger during a terrorist attack on their camp.

The mood at the Military Headquarters Brigade in Yaounde was sad and gloomy as the remains of the Cameroonian soldier killed recently in Niger was granted last respects on Friday June 28, 2013.

Cadet Non-commissioned Officer, Ateba Obara Narcisse who fell arm-in-hand, received last honours from the military, family and friends as he made his last journey to the world beyond.  He was posthumously decorated with the highest medal of hard work by the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o, on instruction from President Paul Biya, Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces.

In his eulogy to the fallen soldier, Alain Mebe Ngo’o described Ateba Obara as a loyal, courageous, intelligent and respectful soldier who loved his profession and was ready to make the supreme sacrifice. The Consular Officer of Niger to Cameroon, Abdoul Mohamed, presented his country’s regrets over the unfortunate incident and expressed the condolences of Niger’s Minister of Defence to the Cameroonian military and family of the departed.

Ateba Obara Narcisse died on May 23, 2013 in Agadez, Niger alongside 23 others after an exchange of fire with a group of terrorists that infiltrated a camp where he was undergoing training. Ateba, aged 26, had his two-year training aborted in the tenth month. He was shortlisted for the training alongside one other Cameroonian after a scrupulous selection exercise. He was holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Private Law from the University of Yaounde II, Soa in 2010 and had enrolled for the Master’s programme in Law 2011. He equally served as an assistant in a law firm in Yaounde before leaving for the military training in Niger.
