Africa’s Worth in Song…

http://cameroon-tribune.cmA Cameroon-born British artist, Miss Debra Debs, is hitting music waves with her bit, “Africa (Higher-Higher).

“Freedom is priceless! Africa is a continent that has all!” These and many more are some of the messages echoed by the Neosoul singer, Miss Debra Debs

, (Debra Bilikha) the Cameroon-born British artist uses a soulful style with an African and European edge to reveal the worth of the African continent in her sound track, Africa (Higher-Higher).

Known for her NeoSoul sounds, with over one million You Tube views, the Africa (Higher Higher) track is  a heart-rending coin-flip supported by a simple Afro-soulful beat. The track, Debra Debs said, was originally written in 2011 during the North African revolution in Libya, Tunisia and Egypt which saw the masses protest in favour of improved socio-economic standards. The Africa (Higher Higher) track is part of Debra Debs demo album called WHUMAN.

In her own words, Debra explains ‘When I wrote ‘Africa’, I was hoping that the same consciousness would filter into other parts of Africa - not as a call to arms or bloody revolution (that is not my style) but as a wakeup call to the entire African continent to be brave enough to advocate improved political, economic, trade, infrastructural and technological standards. Debra Debs is passionate about Africa as other Africans and non-Africans are, but sometimes it takes one or more passionate voices to drive a consolidated thought process particularly amongst the youth and the diaspora. The Africa track is not only written to raise awareness of the plights of the continent but to also congratulate it on the numerous achievements it has had. “Africa is not poor”, Debra underscores, while adding that it is rich in resources, finances, labour and great weather. To depict some of Africa’s successes, the “Africa” video shows pictures of oil rigs, diamond, Mandela's exit from prison and at the end, one of Africa's female President to remind Africans that they can continue to go 'higher' if they pull masses and resources together.

Born in Yaounde, Debra Debs owes her early music days to her mother's Jazz collection and the missionary boarding school (Saker Baptist College, Limbe) for girls she attended for seven years where she sang tenor in both the choir and girl band she formed with her classmates. Being a leading drama student in high school, she was prompted to pursue a degree in Film & Media with Drama in Winchester, UK in 2000. But later she felt the need to quench her taste in the music world. Today, she takes credits for songs such as Love Galore, Blending Colours, Fizzy Lemonade amongst others. Debra Bilikha, a business analyst by profession, will be releasing a new album by September this year.http://cameroon-tribune.cm
