Unauthorised Medical Schools: None Will Be Closed…

They will henceforth train other health professionals except medical doctors.

According to the final decision of the National Commission for Training in Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry in Cameroon, just two private medical institutions are authorised to operate amongst over hundreds of such schools that already exist in the country. However, the commission noted that it does not call for worries for the unauthorised schools will not be closed down.

Although training in the fields of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry is suspended in private schools where the tripartite commission created by the Ministry of Higher Education in 2012 judged as unfit due to their technical capacity, laboratories, human resources, financial capacity as well as a teaching hospital, the good news is that these schools will continue with the training of students and at the end of the year, an attestation of a Biomedical and Medico-sanitary degree will be awarded to each student and not a certificate qualifying them as medical doctors. The commission also decided that students regularly registered in unauthorised medical schools could pursue studies in authorised biomedical faculties. As such, the best students regularly registered in the 2nd and 3rd years of unauthorised medical schools will be subjected to a special selection by the Ministry of Higher Education in view of their admission, exceptionally, into the authorised schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry. The National Commission for Training in Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry in Cameroon has also indicated that the best students who have completed their first degree cycle in unauthorised institutions offering studies in Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry will receive, at the end of their training, an attestation of a biomedical degree which will enable them take the entrance examination into the 4th year of studies in Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry in schools selected to provide such training.

Sources at the Ministry of Higher Education indicate that henceforth, a unique national competitive examination for training into the fields of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry will be organised in Cameroon for entrance into the four public and two private institutions for training in Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry. Information further reveals that this year, the unique national entrance medical examination will take place in the month of October to admit some 800 students amongst which will be 500 medical doctors, 150 pharmacists and 150 dental surgeons.  When the results will be published, the Ministry of Higher Education will distribute the students amongst the six authorised medical institutions depending on their performances. The commission has clearly underscored that the authorisation of private institutions for studies in Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry are subjected to contractualisation through specific terms of reference handed to the private institutions held eligible for authorisation.
