CONAC Strives For Corruption-free Electoral Process

The anti-corruption outfit met with stakeholders of the electoral process in Buea.

The National Anti-corruption Commission, better known by its French acronym as CONAC, has embarked on an education and sensitization campaign to render the electoral process free of corruption ahead of the September 30 municipal and parliamentary elections.

The South West lap of a series of educative and sensitization conferences across the country, brought together administrative authorities, the judiciary, leaders of legalized political parties, Elections Cameroon officials, civil society activists and the media. The public conference in Buea on Friday August 9, 2013 was placed under the theme "Rendering the Electoral Process free of corruption".

It is a move by CONAC to curb all forms of corrupt practices before, during and after the upcoming elections. According to the Moderator of the conference and personal representative of the chairman of CONAC, Mrs. Irene Morikang Tche, corruption is a moral issue and thus requires a multi-stakeholder appraoch to change the mentalities of citizens. This explains why CONAC is involving other stakeholders in the electoral process to flush out the canker-worm.

Earlier in his welcome speech, the first deputy Mayor of Buea, Edward Mosoko highlighted the ills of corruption and called on everyone to put hands on deck for Cameroon to move from corruption to prosperity and from a corrupt free election to empowerment of our local communities. Representing the Governor of the South West Region, the Head of Division for Regional Development, Fabien Kenfack reminded the public that CONAC is an independent public organization charged with fighting corruption.

He called on all political actors to make known their opinions so as to help CONAC in the anti corruption drive. The main speaker at the conference, Professor Emmanuel Yenshu, a Political Sociologist at the University of Buea, educated the participants on the various forms of corruption in the electoral process and how it can be eliminated. He also cited legal instruments as provided by the electoral code and the sanctions that await the corrupt as provided by section 288 of the penal code.
