North West Fons Decry Sale Of Traditional Titles

The Council of Elders met recently in the Fon of Mankon’s palace to denounce NOWEFU President’s leadership.

It is no longer a secret. The North West Fons’ Union, NOWEFU, is not at ease with itself. Dissenting voices are evident with unpleasant outbursts that soil the image of the traditional leaders and threaten the unity of the custodians of North West traditions and customs.

Meeting in the Fon of Mankon’s place on September 5, 2013, NOWEFU’s Council of elders emerged with a communiqué denouncing the commercialisation of traditional titles with the blessings of the President General of NOWEFU, Fon Teche Njei II of Ngyen Muwa. They also castigated the latter for marginalising paramount, First class and other prominent Fons as well as the absence of transparency and accountability in the management of NOWEFU funds.

Curtains dropped on the session with the elders of the Union stating preparedness to cause the review of doubtful or questionable traditional titles awarded during the leadership of Fon Teche Njei II and requested the NOWEFU constitutional review committee led by the Fon of Bafut to co-opt the council of Elders towards the revision of the constitution for an imminent general assembly to endorse. The President General of NOWEFU, Fon Teche Njei II who attended the meeting later stormed out in anger.

The rare meeting also stated the commitment of the Fons to stand by the activities of the government under President Paul Biya and Prime Minister Philemon Yang. Briefing C.T later, the Secretary General of NOWEFU, Fon Ndofoa Zofoa II of Babungo said the initiative by the Council of Elders is all about attempts to restore the lost pride of North West Fons and efforts to ascertain their role as custodians of sane values.

The special session assembled their majesties; S.A.N Angwafor III of Mankon, Fon Dr. Ganyonga III of Bali, Abumbi II, Sehm Mbinglo of Nso, Yuh Vincent II of Kom, Chafah Isaac XI, Aneng Francis, Sintieh Ngum II of Oku, Fon of Balikumbat and Fuekemshi II of Baba I, among others.
