Cameroonians Urged To Withdraw Voters’ Cards

This was the main message yesterday as the country joined the world to observe democracy.

The sixth edition of the International Day of Democracy has been celebrated in Cameroon on the theme “Strengthening voices for democracy,” with a call on Cameroonians with their names on the electoral register to collect their cards, perform their civic rights on September 30, 2013, day for legislative and council elections.

The Secretary General of the National Assembly, Victor Yene Ossomba yesterday September 15, 2013 in Yaounde while chairing the ceremony insisted that to promote democracy in the country, Cameroonians must participate in the electoral process by casting their votes during upcoming twin elections. Instituted in 2007 by the United Nations, Yene Ossomba said it was high time to speak out for democracy by making our voices count and carry in the crowd as part of ways of actively participating in the promotion of democratic principles.

The Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Najat Rochdi before reading the message of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressed satisfaction at working in a country where democratic principles are worth praising. She said the putting in place of the Senate was a giant step that has come to confirm the country’s determination to forge ahead in spite of stumbling blocks that may come where ever.

Coming at a time when Cameroon is bracing up for council and legislative elections, Ban Ki Moon urged leaders to hear, respect and respond appropriately to the voices of the people, whether directly or indirectly  or through elected representatives. “I call on the world’s citizens to think about how they can use their voices to not only take control of their destiny, but to translate their desires and the desires of others into a better future for all,” the UN Secretary General stressed.
