SADC Concerned About Rwandan Troop Deployment

Member states made known their worries to President Joseph Kabila during a summit in Namibia.

Southern African nations expressed their dissatisfaction last Saturday September 14 about the growing number of Rwandan troops on the Congolese border. They hoped that Rwanda was not going to attack Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for such a move would complicate an issue that is already very complex.

According to a communiqué released in Congo, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), called on all neighbouring countries around the Congo to contribute to the peace, security and stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In order to bring an end to this hostile attitude toward the DRC, SADC helped in putting pressure on the M23 rebels and some of the rebellious forces found in the Congo to cease fighting, La Tribune Franco-Rwandaise reported.

On Tuesday, the rebels came for a peace talk with the SADC in Kinshasa. While waiting for the UNO to find a solution to the fighting that is going on between the rebels, mostly composed of service men who had worked in the army in 2009, and the army, Congolese are counting on the help of foreign countries.

According to the Director of the Pretoria based Institute of Security Study (ISS), Jackie Cilliers, South Africa and Malawi have contributed a lot in the deployment of troops to Congo. During the last elections in Congo, South African troops were deployed to reinforce in the distribution of electoral materials. She adds that the communiqué by Congo is timely. Saying that SADC member countries are united and are disturbed by the destabilisation of Congo, RFI reported.
