They were sent off in ceremony at MINSEP on Monday by the Secretary General.
The Cameroonian delegation to take part in the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games left the country yesterday for Palemeng on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.
Prior to their departure, the delegation was received on Monday, September 16 by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, Emmanuel Wonyu, representing the minister in the traditional send-off ceremony. He urged the athletes to measure up to the other competitors so as to bring honour to the country and conduct themselves with honour and discipline.
Cameroon, with a contingent of 30 athletes, will be competing in five sports disciplines including athletics, weightlifting, taekwondo, karate and the men ‘A’ prime volleyball team. The competition which is also going to serve as preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games, will witness the participation of some athletes freshly back from the Francophonie Games like Adam Idrissa and Hugo Mamba.
However, the Cameroonian flag bearer in the competition will be Nyok Nyok Pierre and facilitator in Indonesia will be former footballer, Jules Dennis Onana, because of language problems. The Cameroonian delegation is headed by Mahmat Bouka.
The first edition of the Islamic Games was in 2005 in Saudi Arabia. The second edition which was to take place in Iran in 2009 did not take place because of the bird flu outbreak. The games are organised by the Islamic solidarity sports federation, with Cameroonian born Colonel Kalkaba Malboum as vice president.
