The gifts were part of corporate social responsibility.
About 500 children from 10 orphanages centres for the underprivileged have received exercise books, pens, pencils, chalks, boards, bags, among others, as support for the 2013/2014 academic year. The Back-to-School caravan of the Mtn Foundation which made a stop in Douala on Saturday, September 7, donated the school items to underprivileged children.
The ceremony took place at the premises of the “Centre d’accueil et d’observation de Bepanda” presided over by the Littoral Delegate for Social Affairs. The items were handed over to children of the “Centre d’accueil et observation de Bepanda”, “Synergie Fraternité des Orphelins et Enfants Vulnérables” “Nouvelle Destinée” “Association, Fraternité de Douala “Main dans la Main”, “Maison d’Accueil, de Sécurisation des Enfants en Détresse”, “Orphelinat Saint Jean de Deido”, “Centre d’accueil des petits sages”, and “Orphelinat Maranatha”.
Madiesse Marie Florence, Promoter of Maranatha Orphanage, discloses how she is grappling with the challenge of sending the children to sending; “Most often we personally sponsor their education or churches assist us with clothing, education, food and medication or their cost. But we need more to be able to cope with their daily needs. We spend between 600,000 FCFA and 700,000 FCFA annually to send 12 children to school.
Gifts like this are usually a welcomed relief to our centres and children.” Ndje Sarah, Promoter of the “Centre d’Accueil des Petits Sages”, is pleased with the gesture. “It’s like manna from heaven and we most often depend on such a help to send these children to school,” she said. The caravan is one of the aspects of the Mtn Foundation’s ambitious programme in favour of education in Cameroon.
