Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood Spokesman Arrested

Egypt's army-backed authorities arrested Gehad El-Haddad in an eastern Cairo flat.

Gehad El-Haddad is accused of inciting the killing of protesters. The state-run newspaper, al-Ahram, said Haddad was arrested on Tuesday September 17, 2013 along with the former Governor of Qalyubia Province under President Mohammed Morsi, Hossam Abu al-Bakr, in a flat in the eastern Cairo suburb of Nasr City.

He was transferred to Tora prison alongside the two other Brotherhood members in the outskirts of the capital, officials reported. The other accused along with Haddad is Mahmoud Abu Zeid, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood's executive board.

Also on Tuesday, an Egyptian court upheld an order from the prosecutor's office freezing the assets of 25 leading members of the Brotherhood and allied parties, reported BBC. Many of the group's senior leaders have been detained since the army deposed President Morsi on July 3, on charges similar to the accusations leveled against Haddad.

At least a thousand people have been killed in Egypt since the July 3 toppling of President Morsi, comprising mostly of his supporters but also scores of members of the security forces. Morsi, who is being held at an undisclosed location, has himself been charged with inciting killing and violence. Besides Morsi, the Brotherhood's three top leaders are also in jail, together with the head of its political party.

It is the toughest crackdown on the Islamist group in decades. Haddad is a senior adviser and media spokesman for the Brotherhood. He also served as media strategist for Morsi's presidential campaign in 2011 and is son of Morsi's former Foreign Affairs Adviser, Essam al-Haddad,
