Cameroon Up To Poor Start At Islamic Games

They were defeated in the individual karate categories and volleyball men upon their entry in the competition.

Cameroon has got up to a poor start at the ongoing Islamic solidarity Games in Indonesia. Cameroonian athletes were all butted out in the karate individual categories on the first day of the competitions on Monday. While the intermediate volleyball men national team also left the competition prematurely after having bowed to Azerbaijan by 0-3 sets.

However, Cameroon still has a chance to clinch in the team event in karate as well as the other sports disciplines in which the country is engaged including athletics, weightlifting and taekwondo. Meanwhile, Egypt is leading on the medal tally sheet after winning three gold, two silver and one bronze. Egypt picked up three gold, two silver, one bronze medal to lead the list of 46 Islamic nations although Iran who also have the same number of gold, silver Turkey is in third place with one gold, two silver and a bronze. Host Indonesia is in sixth place with one gold and five bronze medals.

The first edition of the Islamic Games was in 2005 in Saudi Arabia. The second edition which was to take place in Iran in 2009 did not take place because of the bird flu outbreak. The games are organised by the Islamic solidarity sports federation, with Cameroonian born Colonel Kalkaba Malboum as vice president. Non-Muslim citizens in the member countries are also allowed to take part in the Games.
