UN Wants Deployment of African Force to Calm Situation in CAR

The Representative of the UN Secretary General discussed with Prime Yang on Wednesday October 9, 2013.

The United Nations Organisation is currently mobilizing States for a prompt and efficient intervention in the Central African Republic, CAR to tackle the precarious security situation characterized by the spontaneous uprising of the population against the Seleka forces and the corresponding merciless crack down.

The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in the UN Integrated Peace-building Office in the Central African Republic, BINUCA, General Babacar Gaye was at the Star Building in Yaounde yesterday, October 9, 2013 at  the head of a delegation that came to thank Cameroon for contributing to stabilize the situation in the Central African Republic and to seek for more support. After discussions with Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang, General Babacar Gaye said he was currently touring countries of the Central African Sub-region to mobilize the leaders to intensify peace-building efforts in CAR. He said Cameroon has done much in curbing the situation through its contributions to the putting in place of the transitional authorities, financial support within the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, CEMAC and the work of Cameroonian soldiers and Police officials on the field.  Cameroon, he requested, should increase the efforts for the peace-keeping force to reach to 3,500 men.

Describing the situation reigning in CAR, General Babacar Gaye said security was worsening  because the country has no institutional force. He lauded the efforts of States of the sub-region to put in place a political process, but regretted the persistent violence explained by the fact that those in power were not prepared to rule and government lacks financial means to support peace maintenance.

The UN Special Representative said the situation was not all that complicated because there are no two parties fighting. “The situation can be sorted out provided that we take action now,” he said and added, “That is why it is vital we have the full deployment of the African force.” On a note of optimism, he said, “ I am sure that if they are deployed on the ground and the will is there, they can stabilize the situation.” The authorities in charge of transition, he stated, should on their part, put an end to the reign of impunity.
