UN Exhibits Activities In Cameroon

The 68th United Nations Day will be celebrated in Cameroon on October 24, 2013.

The United Nations System in Cameroon in collaboration with the Ministry of External Relations has organized a series of activities leading up to the celebration of the 68th United Nations Day with the official ceremony at the Ministry on Thursday, October 24, 2013.

One of such activities took place at the International Relations Institute of Cameroon, IRIC yesterday, October 22, 2013. In the UN Open Day, UN Agencies in Cameroon such as United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, World Food Programme, WFP, Food and Agricultural Organisation, FAO, World Health Organisation, WHO, United Nations Information Centre, United Nations Children Emergency Fund, UNICEF, and UN Women through exhibition stands and video projections dished out information on their activities in Cameroon.

The Secretary General of IRIC, Charles Fon Abi welcomed UN officials led by the Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Cameroon, Najat Rochdi and that of the Ministry of External Relations led by the Inspector General, Jean Dieudonné Ntsama.

In the afternoon, there was a conference-debate on the theme, “Promoting the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs in Cameroon, balance sheet and perspectives beyond 2015:  Case of the fight against poverty and inequalities”. This is the theme Cameroon has chosen for the celebration.

Activities leading up the celebration of the 2013 edition of the UN Day in Cameroon, started on Saturday, October 19 with a football match at BEAC Complex, then came the sports walk on October 20 and educative talks on October 21 at Lycée Géneral Leclerc and Complex Scolaire International, La Gaieté  in Yaounde. The educative talks were within the context of the UN4U Initiative launched by the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon in 2008 as a way to bring UN senior officials and staff in contact with students from schools and universities.
