Human Rights Commission Seeks 2014 Funding

The Human Rights Commission officials met with partners in Yaounde October 24.

Cameroon’s National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms is currently seeking for additional support and funding to complement governments budgetary allocation to carry out its human rights promotion and protection mission in 2014. The Commission officials presented a balance sheet of activities carried out with funds from partners between 2012 and 2013 and presented priority actions for the coming years in Yaounde yesterday, October 24, 2013 during a “Human rights dinner.”

Cheikh Banoufe, Chairperson of the Working Group on Civil and Political Rights in the Commission, welcoming the partners on behalf of the Commission Chairman, Dr Divine Chemuta Banda, said the dinner was an occasion to present a balance sheet of activities, envisaged projects and jointly identify areas of interest. He said the Commission has a daunting mission but resources allocated for its activities in the State budget cannot enable it adequately meet its objectives. Information from the Commission shows that for the 2013 financial year, it submitted a draft budget of FCFA 2.926,653,000 to government but was finally allocated only FCFA 1,120.000,000 out of which a meagre FCFA 400 million had to go for investment.

The meeting with partners, the second to be organised by the Commission, was globally intended to enable the partners adhere to actions within its statutory mission. It served as ana occasion to present a data bank of projects of the Commission so as to get their additional support.
