Criminal Investigation: Gendarmerie Officers Acquire New Skills

19 Crime Scene Investigators received their testimonials on November 15 in Yaounde.

Officers of the National Gendarmerie and the Police have been told to show proof of professionalism, creativity and a sense of understanding while carrying out criminal investigations. The Secretary of State for Defence in charge of the National Gendarmerie, Jean Baptiste Bokam, made the call on Friday, November 15, 2013 in Yaounde while handing over testimonials to 19 trainees of the 22nd batch of Crime Scene Investigators in Forensic Science at the Judicial Police Perfection Centre (CPPJ) in Yaounde.

Speaking during the occasion, Jean Baptiste Bokam reminded the officers of the task ahead of them such as identifying criminals and gathering sufficient evidence to ensure their sentence. He called on them to show proof of strictness, truth, objectivity, honesty and impartiality as failure to do so will engender serious consequences which will be detrimental to the image of the institution and the society as a whole.

The objective of the refresher course was to prepare the trainees for professional investigation in crime scenes (evidence discovery). The major innovation this year was the introduction of three new subjects notably comparing signatures and writings, illicit drugs and ballistic evidence. The refresher course which lasted six weeks brought together 20 trainees: 14 from the National Gendarmerie and six from the Delegation of National Security. The batch also included two ladies: one from the National Gendarmerie and one from the Delegation of National Security.
