Egypt: Moslem Brotherhood Sues For Peace

The party of deposed President Mohamed Mursi says it is ready for talks with the authorities.

The Islamist coalition led by Egypt’s Moslem Brotherhood says it is ready for negotiations to end the deadly tumult that has rocked the country since their member and Egypt’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Mursi, was overthrown on July 3, 2013.

In a statement on Saturday, November 16, 2013, the coalition called on "on all revolutionary forces, political parties and patriotic figures to enter a deep dialogue on exiting the current crisis," ABC News reported. Observers said the proposal is the most flexible so far made in public by the group. The Jerusalem Post quoted Imam Youssef, a leader of the Asala party that is part of the Islamist coalition, as explaining that seeking a democratic solution did not necessarily mean they had to be in power.

The Islamists however proposed conditions to enter the negotiations, including the release of Islamist prisoners, the reopening of Islamist media that were shut down after Mursi's overthrow, and the "return to the barracks" of the military. The coalition, which has organised weekly protests despite a police crackdown, promised to keep up “peaceful opposition,” but said it wanted a “consensus for the public good of the country,” The National newspaper reported.

The proposal came after more than 1,000 people were killed in clashes with police and thousands arrested since Mohamed Mursi’s overthrow. Much of the Brotherhood’s leadership has been put on trial, including Mursi. The interim government has insisted that the Islamists should unconditionally accept its authority and schedule for elections. It says those who have not taken part in violence would be free to stand for elections.
