Remembering JFK 50 Years After

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas.

Security is expected to be tight today, November 22, 2013, in Dallas as Americans celebrate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Fondly referred to as JFK, he was fatally shot while riding in a motorcade with his wife in Dallas, Texas. The death of the 35th President of the United States at the age of 46 years shocked the nation and reverberated around the world. Thousands of guests will attend the event at Dallas Dealey Plaza where police say they are not leaving anything to chance. Some 5,000 people won tickets through random drawing to attend the event.

Earlier on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, President Barack Obama was joined by his wife, Michelle Obama and fellow Democrat heavyweights to lay a wreath at the grave of President John F. Kennedy, Euronews said. Obama paid tribute to the man who is said to have inspired a generation by saying Kennedy embodied the character of the people he led. According to Larry Bethune, Senior Pastor, University Baptist Church, Austin, the assassination of President Kennedy has become a symbol of evil versus good and the violent resistance to change.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the youngest man elected American President and the youngest to die, the White House website said. Of Irish descent, he was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. Kennedy became the first Roman Catholic President by beating the Republican candidate, Richard Nixon. His inaugural address offered the memorable injunction: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."
