Buea Now Enjoys Water, Street Lights

The facilities are a great relief to the population as the town prepares to host Cameroon's golden jubilee celebrations.

Buea is now experiencing a metamorphosis in terms of infrastructural development. Not only has the town been embellished with beautiful structures but has also witnessed improvement in the water and energy sector, thanks to the upcoming celebrations marking the Golden Jubilee of Cameroon’s reunification.

Anyone who has not been to Buea for the last couple of months, will certainly be amazed with the transformation the town has undergone. The 7 km boulevard from Mile 17 to Police Roundabout is now adorned with street lights planted on both sides of the road. By nightfall, the streets of Buea are illuminated giving commuters the impression that the day is just starting. Other satellite towns of the South West Region are not left out in the fall-outs of the event.

According to the South West Regional Delegate of Water and Energy, Awah Celestine, government has spent huge sums of money in providing street lights in Limbe, Tiko, Mutengene and Kumba within the framework of the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration of Cameroon’s reunification. The Delegate told Cameroon Tribune, on Thursday December 12, 2013 that a good number of transformers have been installed to replace obsolete ones so as to avoid power outages. In addition, two standby power generators have also been procured for the Presidential grandstand and Palace to avert any eventuality.

Constant flow of electricity

On his part, the Chief of Centre for AES SONEL Buea, Wouembe André, affirmed in a chat that electricity derivations to villages have been updated with circuit breakers while a permanent team of technicians is on the ground to ensure constant flow of electricity. He allayed fears of regular power outage after the event by assuring that electricity flow will be permanent during and after the ceremony. “After the event, electricity outages will be no problem. People will not suffer from the blackouts as before. We have ensured that there is constant electricity right up to Kumba with our new equipment”, he assured.

In the water sector, the population is already witnessing regular water supply in Buea unlike the past where so many neighborhoods passed days without a drop of water. To go by the Water and Energy Regional Delegate, 80 percent of the population now have constant water supply thanks to the rehabilitation and water extension project in Buea that have been completed. He said less than 20 percent of the population in some few vicinities still experience water rationing.
