Press Schooled On Governance Principles

The celebrations of Human Rights Day in Douala saw the presentation of the bilingual manual.

Unlike other editions of celebrations marking World Human Rights Day, the 2013 edition in Douala was marked by the presentation of a 96-page bilingual manual titled: “Principles of Governance and Judicial Ethics, within the Commonwealth.” Produced by a Douala-based Civil Society Organisation (CSO) known as Article 55, the information document targets the promotion and defence of economic, social and cultural rights in today’s society.

Addressing the press and some associations on December 10 during activities marking the 65th edition of Human Rights Day, Article 55’s Coordinator, Jean Baptiste Sipa, explained that the idea of rendering public the existing law provisions was based on the principle that “no one is ignorant before the law.”

In the wake of ignorance, abuse and misunderstanding recorded along the years, the CSO deemed it necessary to educate the mass on the roles and responsibilities of the main arms of the government which are the executive, the legislative and the judiciary. The overall objective is to “provide elements for the analysis and monitoring of Cameroon’s democratic process,” the text states.
