Heavyweights Conserve Top Tennis Seats

Ngwe Emmanuel and Tayim Mercy topped the male and female charts respectively.

After having waned in the Camrail and Chinese Ambassador’s cups, Tayim Mercy and Ngwe Emmanuel bounced back to form to win the table tennis championship title in the  women and men’s categories respectively.

In the table tennis championship which took place on Saturday December 21, Tayim Mercy who was butted out at the semi-final stage of the Chinese Ambassador’s Cup a fort night ago, mercilessly smashed Ngo Nyemb by three sets to zero; 11-05,11-08 and11-09, to grab the most coveted table tennis title of the season. While, Ngwe Emmanuel who was absent from the Camrail cup and equally prematurely butted out from the Chinese Ambassador’s cup, equally made a comeback, beating Amougou Yannick in the final, on an identical 3-0 score.

Meanwhile the federations programme to take table tennis to the hinterlands is beginning to bear fruits with the detection of young talents such as Ahmed Nemba and Abdoulai coming from the northern part of the country. Ahmed Nemba seems to be the hope and future of table tennis in Cameroon as he grabbed the title in both the minims and Benjamin categories.

He beat Abdoulai Mohamed 3-0 in the minims and trounced Kemadjou Nana 3-1 in the Benjamin category. Nana Kemadjou however won in the kids’ category, beating Loic Bagueka 3-0. In the junior category, Cho Smitt beat Dimitri Nguepi 3-2 in the final to grab the trophy while Mohamed Boris outsmarted Edoa Ndoa to win the championship in the cadet category.

Speaking at the end of the competition which marked the end of the table tennis season in Cameroon, the president of the Cameroon Table Tennis federation, Alfred Bagueka said he was satisfied all the major competitions earmarked for the season took place despite the late start of the season due to elections in sports federations.

The competitions include the team championship, Top 12 competition, the SONARA, CAMRAIL and Hevea Sud Cam cups as well as the championship in the individual category that closed the season. Alfred Bagueka said it was normal for the same athletes to be winning all the time saying this was obtained even at the international level. He promised to continue taking table tennis to the grassroots.
