Human Rights Action Plan Ready

The National Human Rights Commission has adopted an ambitious plan of action for 2014.

The National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms  has set out to lobby government endorse and implement the National Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of human rights in the country  and also to extend  human rights education to higher institutions of learning.

These were some of the priority aspects of the 2014 ambitious plan of action of the institution adopted during its 15th ordinary session on December 20, 2013 at the Yaounde Conference Centre. Other salient points in the plan of action include the construction of the Commission’s head office in Yaounde, amendment of the law setting up the Commission to suit the present dispensation and continuous creation of awareness in the authorities on human rights.

The commissioners in the session chaired by the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Dr Divine Chemuta Banda, also planned to intensify visits to prisons to hammer on the improvement of detention conditions, as well as to vulgarise  national and international human rights instruments. The plan of action will be executed with a budget of FCFA 2 059 633 811 adopted during the session.

Besides working on the plan of action, the Commission officials also expressed their compassion for Cameroonians currently being repatriated from the Central African Republic because of the civil unrest rocking the country, the final release from the session stated. They appreciated government action and took the commitment to follow up the care that is given the repatriated citizens.

They also reviewed some of the past activities of the Commission that included the observation of the September 30, 2013 twin legislative and municipal elections; publication of its report on the state of human rights in Cameroon in 2012 and discussions the Commission chairperson had with several personalities, among whom was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navy Pillay on July 1, 2013.
