Gambian Commends Cameroon's Hospitality

The Gambian Vice President had discussions with the Governor of the Littoral Region during her stop over in Douala on February 1, 2014.

For the second time within a week, Douala played host to an important delegation from the Republic of The Gambia. The Gambian Vice President and Minister of Women’s Affairs, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, who led a delegation of her country’s authorities stopped over in Douala on her way back from Addis Abeba, where they participated in the African Union Summit.

The delegation was received by Governor Joseph Beti Assomo of the Littoral Region at the Douala International Airport on February 1. Following a word of welcome from the Cameroonian authorities in Douala and a brief exchange between the Governor and The Gambian Vice President, the delegation headed to the Sawa Hotel for a special reception.

Before the delegation boarded the country’s Presidential jet 90 minutes after its arrival at 1 p.m., The Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Aboubakar Abdullah Senghor, conveyed their thanks and gratitude on behalf of The Gambian Vice President and Minister of Women’s Affairs, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, to the people of Cameroon for their warm hospitality. “This has been a pass over but we are humbled by this and we wish all of us to come back to Douala,” he noted.

The Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs explained what had been achieved at the AU Summit concerning war-torn South Sudan and the Central African Republic: “For South Sudan the objective has always been unconditioned ceasefire. The process should be backed by a comprehensive and inclusive process of making everlasting peace. Fortunately, there has been ceasefire.

Now the most important objective has been for them to start inclusive reconciliation to make sure that the conflict I resolved once and for all.” The Republic of The Gambia chaired the AU Peace and Security Council in December 2013. The objective was immediate and unconditioned ceasefire which has been achieved.
