Cameroon Rekindles Hope At Volleyball Championship

They beat Nigeria by three sets to zero in the third outing in the tournament yesterday, February 26, 2014.

The Volleyball Lionesses rekindled hope of qualifying for the 2014world championship in Italy by obtaining their second victory in the ongoing qualifiers in Algeria. The Lionesses beat their counterparts of Nigeria 3-0 yesterday to keep their chances in tact of qualifying for the final round of the world championship. It was an outright domination for the Lionesses who won 25-14, 25-11 and 25-16.

The Lionesses began the campaign with an emphatic three-nil victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. Then went ahead to bow to the tournament’s favourite Egypt by two sets to three on tie-break; 25-18, 26-28, 25-19, 22-25 and 18-16 in an encounter which was considered the top match of the tournament.

Their third encounter which was supposed to be against Ghana did not take place owing to the withdrawal of the latter.Despite the victory, the Lionesses remain second on the classification table to Egypt which has so far lost no match, recording three straight victories.

Their next encounter will be against the host country, Algeria who have been making things difficult for Cameroonians in their country ever since they lost their bid for the Men’s world championship to take place in Poland during the qualifiers a fortnight ago in Yaounde. The Algerians left promising to make things difficult for Cameroon in Algiers and seem to have been keeping to that promise as the Lionesses are barred from training in the hall where all other teams engaged in the competition re training.

The Lionesses play their last game of the competition on Friday February 28, 2014 against Botswana. Though Cameroon’s destiny is no longer in their hands, they have to win all the remaining matches and hope for a false step from Egypt, to clinch the last qualification ticket for the world championship. The first two places have already been grabbed by Kenya and Tunisia who came first and second respectively during the African championship in Nairobi.
