CAR Human Rights Situation Discussed

The Minister of External Relations on April 22, 2014, had discussions with the Chairman of the International Commission of Inquiry.

Cameroonian-born, Bernard Acho Muna, the Chairperson of the International Commission of Inquiry tasked with investigating human rights violations in the Central African Republic, yesterday, April 22, 2014 briefed the Minister of External Relations on the deplorable human rights situation in that country and solicited Cameroon government support. This was during an audience External Relations Minister, Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo granted him.

Justifying his mission to Cameroon, Bernard Muna said that, “As a Cameroonian and secondly because Cameroon is a close neighbour to the Central African Republic, it was important that during my first mission to the country, I be able to converse with government through the Minister of External Relations to see how they are involved in the Sub-region, see what help Cameroon will be able to give our mission in future and how things are evolving.”

Bernard Muna said the mission of his Commission of inquiry involves issues of international humanitarian law on human rights. He disclosed that, “There are revenge killings. It is a country that is completely down.”  As to the help expected from Cameroon, he said, “Some of the individuals who commit these offences flee to neighbouring countries and when the time comes, if there will be a judicial process, we will need the help of the government.”
