Deadly Stampede At Emeneya Tribute Festival

At least 14 people, including two policemen, were crushed to death on April 25, 2014, in a stampede at a tribute festival for Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC singer, King Kester Emeneya. Some reports said 21 people died.

The BBC cited officials as saying the incident, attributed to "the enthusiasm of the audience," took place in the singer's home town of Kikwit in Bandundu Province. Some survivors at a hospital in Kikwit - about 500 km from the capital, Kinshasa - said a power cut at the festival triggered a rush to the exits.

The festival, which was due to last three days, was cancelled. Thousands of people attended Emeneya's funeral near Kinshasa last month. He died in February 2014 in Paris, France at the age of 57, from heart problems. Observers say Emeneya was an innovative musician who introduced electronic instruments such as the synthesiser to Congolese music.
