Nigerian Civil War Film Release Delayed

Nigeria's film board on April 25, 2014, delayed the release of ‘Half Of A Yellow Sun,’ a film about the Biafran War, the BBC reported.

The film, by Nigerian-born British director, Biyi Bandele, was set to open in Nigerian cinemas on April 25. A film board spokesman said there were "regulatory issues" with the film, but explained that it was not "officially banned."

The film is based on a novel by Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, on the 1967-1970 Civil War in which more than a million people died. Some fear the film, which is seen as sympathetic to the Biafran separatist cause, could stoke up ethnic tensions. Biyi Bandele said he was not sure why the censorship board delayed certification, adding that they received the film seven months ago.

He denied that the film was biased, explaining that he did not see how it could incite violence. The director also said the film raised issues which Nigeria badly needed to discuss.
