UPC Differences Over Congress Persist

Party faction leaders are torn between organizing the congress in June 2014 and re-organising grassroots structures as a precondition.

The crisis surrounding the highly awaited unity congress of the Union des population du Cameroun, UPC are far from settled as the faction of the party led by the Secretary General, Hon.Robert Bapooh Lipot has instead launched the re-organistion of the grassroots structures of the party and the process to redynamise the UPC as preconditions for the organization of the unity congress.

Other party officials who form part of its Provisional Committee, Hon. Sende Pierre and Zogning François during what Hon. Bapooh Lipot termed as a “fictitious Steering Committee” meeting in Pouma last May 3, 2014 convened the unity congress for June 6 to 7, 2014 at the Yaounde Conference Centre.

Hon. Robert Bapooh Lipot during a press conference in Yaounde yesterday, May 8, 2014 described the actions of Sende Pierre and Zogning François as the gross violation of the Boumnyebel meeting of UPC Provisional Committee extended to senior and elected officials that took place on January 18, 2014.

He said the final release from the meeting recommended the Provisional Committee to designate members of local commissions to lead operations to re-organise and redynamise the party grassroots structures in accordance with the UPC texts.

He said the re-organisation process had to take place within a maximum period of six months. The release stated that if after a mid-term evaluation the process was satisfactory, the Steering Committee would be convened and would decided on the date of the unitary congress. Sende Pierre and Zogning François, Hon Bapooh stated signed the final release of the Boumnyebel.

As at the time of the press conference yesterday, Hon. Bapooh said, the re-organisation of the party grassroots structures had not yet started, hence the congress could not be organized soon. The re-organisation of the UPC, he said had to culminate in the endorsement and commissioning of the structures, putting in place of a Unitary Steering Committee and the immediate convening of the unity congress whose delegates would be leaders elected from the grassroots.

The May 8, 2014 Yaounde press conference was therefore used to launch the campaign to redynamise and re-organise the grassroots of the UPC. After the press conference, the faction officials brainstormed on orientations and proposals for the success of the exercise.
