Boko Haram Uprising: World Coalition to Tackle Threats

The Paris Summit that held on 17 May adopts strategies to stall Boko Haram atrocities in Africa.

President François Hollande in response to a request by Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan Saturday 17 May 2014 at the Elysee palace, hosted an important summit on Boko Haram, and the destruction the group is perpetrating in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

Participating in the summit were five African leaders presidents namely; Paul Biya of Cameroon, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, Thomas Boni Yayi of Benin, Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger and Idriss Debi Itno of Chad. Also invited to the summit were representatives from the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

The USA was represented by its Under Secretary, Mrs Wendy Sherman, the United Kingdom by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, William Hague and the European Union by Herman Von Rompay and Pierre Vimont respectively President of the European Council, and Executive Secretary-General for External Action.

For over four hours, the African leaders, their cooperation partners, their host President François Hollande brainstormed and came out with far-reaching strategies aimed at stalling the atrocities Bko Haram is perpetrating in Nigeria and neighbouring countries, Cameroun being one of the neighbouring countries greatest hit by the Boko Haram deadly uprising.

It should be noted that Boko Haram which launched its activities in 2009 as a religious Islamist militant group mostly against western education, has since become a terrorist group linked to other groups with similar motives.

But what a shock that such deadly activities should be carried out in the name of religion whatever the reasons could be. What a surprise that this comes up at a time when the most populous Sub Saharan nation which is also Africa’s richest country should and ought to be working with its nationals to become a black power considering its human and physical resources.

At the news conference chaired by President François Hollande, the African leaders at the Summit expressed appreciation for the president’s initiative to host such a vital meeting in the face of ever-mounting atrocities perpetrated by a terrorist group that is destroying and kidnapping citizens and foreigners including even school children. Consequently, participants pledged to cooperate at national and international levels to put an end to the uprisings being perpetrated by Boko Haram.
