Holiday Travellers Troupe To Bus Stations

During this period, motor parks are swarmed by passengers travelling in and out of Yaounde.

The scene at the Mvan motor park in Yaounde was an extremely busy one on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The long vacation is around the corner. Students and pupils are travelling from one town to the other to spend the long vacation. Anyone who happens to pass by the Mvan junction where the motor park is situated is mistaken for a passenger by luggage porters. In most cases, some people have their luggage seized from them and taken to travel agencies which they do not like.

Travel agencies such as Bucavoyages, Musango, Jeannot Voyages and Mondial Voyages, among others, are doing good business judging from the number of passenger waiting for their turns to board buses. The various buses are leaving for towns like Edea, Douala, Limbe, Bafoussam, Tiko, Buea, Sangmelima, Ebolowa and other destinations. Passengers include little children and adults of all sexes and walks of life. Transport fares for various destinations range from FCFA 2,000 to 6,000.

At Bucavoyages last Saturday, passengers were busy buying their tickets for Douala. The passengers had to present their identity cards before buying the tickets. The Director of Bucavoyages, Francky Bourdier, said the agency has enough buses to transport the passengers despite the increasing number of passengers during this period. He explained that to ensure security, loaders have been provided with jackets for easy identification.

As for the technical state of the vehicles, he said the agency has a team of mechanics who check the vehicles at night and those that have faults are not programmed for travelling in the morning. They also ensure that drivers do not drive for more than five days and they are not allowed to do more than three journeys per day. Concerning security of luggage, the agency makes announcements warning people to watch their luggage as it will not be responsible for any missing luggage.

The information is also on the travelling tickets. The company also has posters in the buses telling clients not to allow bad practices such as overloading and excessive speed, among others and with telephone numbers on them to report in case a driver does not respect the rules. Security guards have also been hired to ensure security.

At the Musango Bus Service, the story was similar. The Chief of Station Yaounde, Sylvestre Mboro said for the holiday period the agency has increased the number of loaders and reinforced security.
