The last surviving African representative was butted out of the World Cup by Germany on June 30, 2014.

It was the end of the road for Africa yesterday at the ongoing world cup tournament in Brazil as the continent’s last surviving representative was butted out yesterday by Germany. The salvation goal was got for Germany by Schurrle at the 92nd minutes, barely two minutes into the prolongation.

Ozil aggravated scores a few minutes to the end of the encounter and when it was thought all was lost for North Africans, Algeria got a consolatory or face saving goal just before the blast of the final whistle and almost equalised a few seconds later.

Though Germany had an upper hand in the encounter in terms of ball possession, Algeria gave them a real run for their money and came close to levelling scores several times in the encounter. Like most African teams in the competition who put up a good show only to breakdown towards the dying minutes of the match, Algeria withstood the German onslaught for more than ninety minutes and even after conceding two goals remained very menacing.

 Algeria is however leaving the competition with their heads high as the Fennecs were far from ridiculous in an encounter they could as well have won. Meanwhile it has been a dismal performance from Africa in Brazil as compared to their past record in South Africa 2010 when Ghana attained the quarter finals.

This time, the furthest the African teams could go was the 8^th final and only two of the five representatives crossed the group stage of the tournament. With the African representatives out of the way, the world cup now boils down to a tussle between Europe and Latin America. As to which way the balance is going to sway, remains a matter of wait and see.
