Profile: Jerome Boateng, The Pillar

His presence in the defence is more than a plus for the German national team.

The 2014 World cup Competition is now twenty-five days old with only eight teams remaining. While some teams left with shame, others with tears, most of the 184 players still in the race look tired except one.He is Jerome Boateng who players for the German national team.

Born in 1988 in West Berlin (Germany), the right half-back defender kick-started his football career at Hertha BSC in 2006, and has since then played for Hamburger SV, Manchester City and now with Bayern Munchen.

For international duties, Boateng has gone through the different echelons of the German soccer team beginning with the under-17 national team. In 2007 he was called up to the German under-19 squad and later the German under-21 team where he won the UEFA-European Under-21 Football Championship.

He was called up for the first time in the German senior national team by Joachem Loew in 2009 during an encounter pitting Germany to Russia. Though he was sent off and become the first German international player to be expelled on his debut, the polyvalent defender who can also play as defensive midfielder has been a pillar in the German national squad.

In 2010, Jerome Boateng was included in the German 23-man-squad to the World Cup in South Africa. During that competition, Jerome played against his brother Kevin Prince who plays for Ghana. It was the first time in World Cup history that two brothers played on opposite sides.

He became an undisputable regular player as he did not only feature in all the matches, but contributed immensely to the progress of the team in the tournament. At the end, the team was on the podium having emerged third for the second consecutive time in the World Cup.

At the current 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Jerome Boateng has been on the limelight especially for Brazilian fans (girls in particular). On the pitch, he has been putting up a very good show with the national team now at the quarter-finals. He featured in all the three matches of the group stage and the knock-out encounter against Algeria. His personal record in the national team stands at thirty-eight appearances and no goal scored.
