Echoes from Brasil

Hundreds of fans last Tuesday left the Copacabana beach helter-skelter following a series of massive assaults by thieves. The Copacabana beach apart from being one of the most attractive sites in Rio de Janeiro is a FIFA World Cup fan-fest-zone.

Dozens of youths are said to have invaded the area while the encounter Brazil versus Germany was going on and snatched beach bags, mobile phones, ripping chains and jewelries from people’s necks. Since the start of the 2014 World Cup, the “Arrastao” or “Big Drags” as they are known in Portuguese have been absent from the streets due to the presence of heavy security in host towns.

Fabio Capello Hurled With Condoms

Russian fans angry with the country’s dismal performance at the 2014 World Cup have hurled condoms at the national team coach Fabio Capello in front of the Russian Football Federation. The fans who demanded his sacking also condemned the Federation President Nicolai Tolstykh and the Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko for supporting the former England trainer. Capello who is the highest paid national team coach in the World, guided the Russian national team to the 2014 World Cup after 12-years of absence. His contract runs up to 2018.

Twitter’s New World Cup Record

The dramatic Brazil versus Germany semi-final match last Monday has set a new twitter record of 36.6 million tweets, breaking the previous record of 16.4 million tweets during the Chile versus Brazil knock-out encounter two weeks ago. Twitter also revealed that Sami Khedira’s goal at the 29th minute of the game triggered 580, 166 tweets per minute to become a new record.
