Fundong Council Plants 12,000 Trees

Government-private partnership was saluted in the war against desertification and climate change.

Energy is crucial in President Biya’s vision for Cameroon to emerge in 2035 and it is against this backdrop that the Fundong Council has stated preparedness to plant some 12,000 trees in 2014 within efforts to guarantee fuel wood and ensure an eco-friendly environment. In effect, the tree-planting exercise started recently with some 5,000 trees to plant in the neighbourhood of Mentang village. It is the result of a partnership with AES-Sonel.

The “Tree for life Project” features the planting of 5000 eucalyptus trees, monitoring and evaluation for two years before they are handed over to the Fundong Council. Launching the tree planting the Mayor, Awoh Ndang Denis, stressed the importance of trees for construction, fuel wood, household furniture, climate change control and energy transportation, summed up in an eco- friendly environment.

The project also emerges with temporary job opportunities for youths involved in planting, tracing and fencing the area, holiday jobs for others and other opportunities for the local community. That is perhaps, why Mayor Awoh Ndang Denis took time off to appeal to the National Electricity Corporation, AES-Sonel, to consider Fundong Sub-division which showcases less than 5 per cent of electricity supply.

It was the Second Assistant SDO of Boyo, Nicholas Nkongho Manchang, who inspired the collaboration of stakeholders to ensure the success of the “trees for life project”. Around in Mentang with the blessings of the administration, he warned against any unauthorised or illegal felling of trees and bush-fires in the area carved out for the project.  He saluted public-private partnerships that inspire the fight against desertification and climate change.

The initiative guarantees a safer environment for posterity. Away from that, Fundong Council also signed a recent convention with the Regional Delegation of Forestry and Wildlife, to plant 7,000 environment-friendly prunus trees in the municipality. From the look of things, the Council is setting the pace in tree planting for life.
