Senate President Niat Njifenji made the declaration during the closing plenary sitting of Parliament on July 10, 2014.

The President of the Senate, Marcel Niat Njifenji during the closing plenary sitting of the June 2014 ordinary session of Parliament yesterday, June 10, stated the support of the Senate to President Paul Biya’s actions to fight against insecurity in the country’s borders.

The Senate bureau earlier in a session stated clearly the role of Senators in the fight, especially against the Islamist sect Boko Haram that been carrying out attacks in Far North Cameroon. He said the Head of State’s attention paid to the liberation of hostages and the stepped up fight confirmed his willingness to stay closer to his people.

The closing plenary sitting in the Senate was attended by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril and the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang, among other senior government officials. They listened to Marcel Niat Njifenji laud the collaboration between the two House of Parliament that are the Senate and the National Assembly, as well as the collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government with the Prime Minister’s presence as testimony.

He said the June 2014 ordinary session of Parliament that took place in serenity with Senators working together irrespective of political leanings, further confirmed their determination to carry out the missions assigned to the institution. Before the closing speech, the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi defended the bill to authorize the President of the Republic to ratify the interim agreement with a view to an economic partnership agreement between the European Community and its member States, on the one part, and the Central African party, on the other.

The Senate President in his speech described the bill as one that will open greater and brighter prospects to Cameroon in the European market and help to modernize the economic and make it competitive.  He also cited bills on air transport agreements as vital in boosting the country’s economic and tourism sectors. The Senators in an in-camera plenary adopted the Standing Orders of the Congress of Parliament.

The plenary sitting ended with the award of the medal of the Commander of the National Order of Valour to the Secretary General of the Senate, Michel Meva’a M’Eboutou and the medal of the Officer of National Order of Valour to three  Senators.
