Children Learn Cameroonian Customs

The fifth edition of the holiday workshop kicked off in Yaounde on Monday July 14, 2014.

Children in Yaounde and its environs are acquiring talents in diverse domains in culture in a holiday workshop at the National Public Library in Yaounde. The holiday workshop which is in its fifth edition is organised by the Ministry of Arts and Culture on the theme, “Preservation, promotion and vulgarisation of our Cultural Heritage.”

The children holiday workshop kicked off on July 14, 2015 and will end on August 8, 2014. It comprises over ten workshops in cultural domains such as dance, music, storytelling, painting and drawing, calabash and porcelain decoration, reading and writing, piano, xylophone, traditional games as well as the mother tongue, among others.

Three days after the kick-off the children are adapting themselves to the environment and learning new skills. The mother tongue workshop is one of the workshops that have caught the attraction of many parents. This year, the three local dialects notably Bulu (South), Bakweri (South West) and Fe’efe are the local languages that are being taught.

Marie Catherine Menye, trainer of the Bulu language said for the first three days the children have learnt the basics in the Bulu language such as how to pronounce and write their names, the seven days of the week and how to count from 0 to 10. The Technical Adviser Number One of the Ministry of Arts and Culture, Dr. Asheri Kilo said the objective of the workshop is to enable young children and youths acquaint themselves with the customs and tradition of the country.

The participants are children from five years and above. The registration fee stands at FCFA 20,000 per child. This, according to her, is because the trainers are talented artists, professionals in the field of culture as well as university lecturers.  She explained that the workshop cannot take more than 80 children and parents have until today, Friday July 18, 2014, to register their children.
