A workshop to enhance the skills of women in climate change opened in Yaounde on Tuesday July 22, 2014.

Rural women in Cameroon are facing the adverse effects of climatic changes which continuously affect household’s food security, health, and the general well being of women and Families.  Unfortunately, inequalities in gender have made it more difficult for women to adapt. It is in this light that a three-day workshop to enhance the skills of women in the fight against climate change opened in Yaounde on Tuesday July 22, 2014.

Speaking at the opening, the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie Thérèse Abena Ondoa said the programme fits well within government’s actions to empower women through the amelioration of their socio-economic situations.

She numerated actions such as “One woman, One tree, One family, One tree”, the Green Sahel Project, the project of conservation and participative management of mangrove Eco-Systems in Cameroon as well as the Global Programme Approach to adaptation to climatic changes which are currently being implemented by the government of Cameroon.

Through the workshop NEPAD has as workshop is to support small farmer holders through the gender Agriculture and climate change programme in a bid to achieve an effective and more equitable access to climate-smart agricultural techniques. The NEPAD Gender, climate and Agriculture Support Programme, it should be noted will be implemented in five African countries namely Cameroon, Rwanda, Malawi, Ethiopia and Niger.

Organised by the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family in collaboration with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) the workshop brings together stakeholders in the gender, environmental and Agricultural sectors across the Country.
