SOPECAM Out Of Anniversary Tournament With Honour

They lost 2-4 to Canal 2 International in post match penalties in the semi-finals on July 23, 2014.

Despite an unbeaten record at the ongoing Cameroon Tribune Anniversary Cup, the team from Sopecam made a premature exit from the competition. They bowed 2-4 to Canal 2 International in post match penalties after both sides separated on a virgin draw after regular time of play.

The defeat came as a surprise given that Sopecam beat Canal 2 at the quarter final level of the competition and Canal 2 was just in brought at the last minute to fill the void at the semi finals after the forfeiture of Anecdote. Canal 2 as best loser qualified for the semi finals since they conceded only one goal against Sopecam and CRTV conceded two goals in the quarter finals.

Meanwhile in the other semi final match, MTN Cameroun beat Siantou 2-1 to clinch a place in the final. MTN Cameroun will therefore be facing Canal 2 International in the final. Five teams took part in the competition organised as part of activities marking the 40th anniversary of Cameroon Tribune namely, MTN Cameroon, CRTV, Canal 2 International, Siantou radio and Sopecam.

The only team that desisted at the last minute was that of Anecdote media group which enabled Siantou to qualify for the semi finals by forfeiture. The finals of the competition will take place tomorrow in the presence of some eminent personalities including the General Managers of MTN Cameroon and Sopecam among others.

According to the assistant coordinator of sports and cultural activities in Sopecam, Amougou Patrice Gervais, the premature exit of Sopecam will not in any way affect the pump and pageantry of the final since the objective was not to win but to encourage fraternity among the media organs and partners of Sopecam like MTN Cameroun. He said the organisation of the competition has been hitch-free as there are no major injuries or incidents and express the wish for the finals to equally be hitch-free.

There will also be competitions in handball beginning today in Anguissa-Yaounde. The special touch of the semi finals was the presence of the General Manager of Sopecam, Marie Claire Nana, who was accompanied by the General Manager of the Chadian agency of editing and publishing, Mbaire Bessingar. He was given the honour to give the kick off to the semi final match between Sopecam and Canal 2 and both personalities watched the match to the end and even the penalty shoot-outs.
