The authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have confirmed two cases of Ebola in Jera, Equateur Province located some 1,200 kilometres northeast of the capital city, Kinshasa, AFP reported.
Confirming the out break, Health Minister Felix Kabange Numbi is reported to have declared, “"The results are positive. The Ebola virus is confirmed in DRC.” The country’s National Institute of Biomedical Research carried out an analysis of eight samples of the 13 people who died of unidentified fever in northwest of Equateur Province this month and two of the samples tested positive for Ebola, AFP reported citing the Health Minister.
Mr Kabange Numbi reportedly claimed that Ebola outbreak in the country was unrelated to the epidemic that has already killed 1,427 people in the West Africa countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
The reported outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo marks the seventh in the country since the first one was identified in 1976 near the Ebola River.
The Congolese authorities have stepped up preventive health measures that include the provisions for save burial of infested corpses, strict control of passengers arriving from affected countries, Health Minister reportedly said. The country also counts on the experience gained from the first six outbreaks of Ebola to eradicate the present resurgence.
