Congo Brazzaville: Chinese Company To Cultivate Cassava

CGC International Ltd needs 30,000 hectares of land in Pointe-Noire.

China Geo-Engineering Corporation International Ltd, CGCINT with headquarters in Beijing, China is seeking some 30,000 hectares of land in the Congolese economic and industrial metropolis, Pointe-Noire to invest in cassava cultivation, Africa Time reported.

The company plans to set up a cassava starch plant in China with cassava products got from Congo, Jiang Fei, the Deputy Director General of CGC International is reported to have explained , stating that the country needs starch to be processed into alcohol and fuel.

Mr Jiang Fei had discussions with Pierre Mabiala, Congo’s Minister of Land Tenure and Public Property in the capital, Brazzaville last weekend. CGC International plans to produce over 10,000 tons of cassava flour, the company’s senior official said.  Between 200 and 300 Congolese workers will be recruited during the initial phase of the project, he disclosed.

Cultivating cassava in Pointe-Noire, Jiang Fei reportedly explain, is to facilitate the evacuation of the product to China. Minister Pierre Mabiala, Africa Time reported, stated the commitment of the Congo’s government to enable the Chinese company carry out the cassava cultivation project.

CGC International Ltd has set up representative offices in Africa in Niger-Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Senegal, as well as Congo –Gabon. It mainly undertakes all kinds of international projects in Africa and Asia, including water supply and drainage, wastewater treatment, farmland irrigation, housing construction, road and bridge construction, borehole drilling as well as mineral prospecting and exploitation.
