North West Registers Over 24,000 New Voters

As per statistics from ELECAM Regional office, more male than female have been registered.

A few days to the close of the electoral register in the North West Region, officials say there has been an increase in the number of newly-registered voters. According to statistics from the ELECAM North West Regional office, as at August 21, 2014, some 12,905 men and 11,772 women had registered, giving a total of 24,677 new voters.  

To go by division, Mezam tops the chart with 10,316, followed by Donga Mantung with 2,968. Bui occupies the third position with 2,820, followed by Boyo with 2,579 and Ngoketunjia with 2,189. Momo is sixth with 2,170, while is Menchum is seventh with 1,635 newly registered voters. The electoral register that was opened on January 1, 2014 as per the law will officially close on August 31, 2014.

According to the Communication Officer for ELECAM in the North West, Coldey Ndofekeu Olivier, after the electoral register was opened last January, mobile teams were dispatched to various areas to get people registered. He also disclosed that after the first three months, the turnout was timid, but during these last days, there has been a rush as most people want to get their names on electoral rolls.

He equally said that they have also redoubled efforts on the field to get more people register. Through radio talks and meeting with people of different groups, he went on, people are being sensitised on the importance of registering.  Since Monday, August 25, 2014, some ELECAM Board members have been holding meetings with local staff as well as criss-crossing the region to supervise and evaluate the level of registration.
