Cameroon Loses To Ghana In Under 17 AFCON Qualifiers

The Cadet Lions lost 1-2 to the Black Starlets in Yaounde on Saturday, September 13, 2014.

The U-17 Lions have jeopardised their chances of qualifying for the final round of the African Youth championship by losing 1-2 to the Black Starlets of Ghana at home at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium on Saturday. Ghana looked more enterprising from the onset of the game, dominating play at the midfield. However, the Black Starlets got the curtain raiser throw a corner kick which was headed-in by Ernest Agyiri at the 30th minute.

While Cameroon was expected to revolt, it was the Black Starlets who kept on mounting pressure and aggravated scores ten minutes’ later through Issah Abass. Two minutes to the end of the first half, Cameroon saved honours through a long drive from about 30 metres by the captain of the cadet lions, Martin Hongla.

Upon resumption of play for the second half, Cameroon stepped up their game but their offensives into the Ghanaian camp remained sterile due to poor finishing skills from the attackers. Not even the several substitutions made by Coach Joseph Atangana were able to break the deadlock as the score line remained unchanged till the blast of the final whistle.

Reacting to the defeat, the coach of the cadet lions said it was because they have not had enough time to work together and their last match was over a month ago. He said they need more time to work together so as to build a conquering team.
