The ten-country Multi Sectoral Regional Office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) at the Bastos neigbourhood in Yaounde yesterday September 16, 2014 received the blessings of the institution’s Director General, Irina Bokova.

The UNESCO boss inaugurated the multifaceted edifice as part of her 48-hour working visit to Cameroon which among others gave her the opportunity to evaluate relations with Cameroon as well as seek ways of deepening the already cordial ties between the country and the 1945-founded institution.

The Multi Sectoral Regional Office for Central Africa covers Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Sao Tome and Principe. The flags of the ten-member countries were solemnly hoisted during the ceremony to give the building a multinational connotation.

It emerged from yesterday’s inaugural that the Yaounde regional office, a four-storey building comprising 79 offices, partners with other national offices that already exist in the region in striving to achieve UNESCO’s mission of contributing to building peace, eradicating poverty, ensuring sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture, communication and information.

Speaking during the colourful ceremony spiced by the angelic voices of the Unity Choir and cultural dance groups from across the country, the Government Delegate to the Yaounde City Council, Gilbert Tsimi Evouna and the Minister of Basic Education, Youssouf
Adjidja Alim who is also the President of UNNESCO’s National Commission said offering the office as well as ensuring its upkeep testify of Cameroon’s commitment to partner with the institution in attaining its noble goals.

While appreciating the edifice, the visiting Director General expressed hopes that the conducive working environment would help in attaining the institution’s objectives.  The cutting of the ribbon, unveiling of the commemorative plaque, guided visit, signing of the golden book and an immortalised group photo crowned the heavily-attended ceremony.batiment-unesco-yaounde
