Chevening Scholars Presented Officially

The British High Commissioner, H.E. Brian Olley, organised a send-off ceremony on their behalf.

Unlike last year when Cameroon had a lone beneficiary, the 2014-2015 Chevening Scholarship programme retained two scholars this year. They are Monique Kwachou, an administrative assistant in the University of Buea. She will be studying a Masters of Art Degree in Education, Gender and International Development at the London Institute of Education.

The second is His Royal Highness, Oliver Y. Nchofoua, Fon of Babessi village in Ngoketunjia Division of the North West Region. He will undertake a Masters of Science in Drilling and Well Engineering at the Robert Gordon University. They were officially presented prior to their departure in the days ahead, during a send off ceremony on 11 September, 2014, organised by the British High Commissioner, H.E. Brian Olley.

The solemn occasion was attended by the Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, representatives of the Ministers of Higher Education and that of Women Empowerment and the Family, alongside members of the Chevening Scholarship Alumni Association.

Addressing the guests, the British High Commissioner explained that the Chevening Scholarship, 30 years old today, aims at strengthening the existing educational and cultural ties between his country and those of the developing world. Thus, the two laureates will join a global network of over 4,300 scholars from 150 countries during their stay in the United Kingdom. He equally announced greater prospects for the 2015-2016 session whereby, 15 beneficiaries will be retained thanks to an increase in the funding. Upon return to Cameroon, he added, the two winners will become full members of the Cameroon Chevening Alumni Association.

The British High Commissioner and the Minister of Communication jointly handed to the laureates their certificates, credit cards and pins that officially acknowledging them as Chevening Scholars, representing their country. In his closing remarks, Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary expressed gratitude from Cameroon government towards the initiative.  He urged the scholars to uphold the trust and use the opportunity to get a sound training so that upon return they can equally be part of the development train towards emergence, for which education is indispensable.
A day earlier, the British High Commissioner also hosted the launching of an alumni Commonwealth Scholars’ Fellow’s Association.
