Gabon Intensifies Anti-embezzlement Drive

More managers of public funds are being investigated.

The government of Gabon has intensified the ongoing operation, “mains propres”, intended to cleanse the management of public funds from acts of corruption and embezzlement by investigating more suspects.

Martial Leyinda, former administrator of funds destined for projects within the framework of manifestations baptized, “fêtes tournantes” and Benjamin Endestsounga, the former Permanent Secretary of the project who also doubled as former Secretary General of the Public Works Ministry were recently before the Financial Brigade of the Judicial Police, reports say.  They answered questions on the use of funds allocated for projects within the framework of the manifestations in Nyanga Province.

Reports say over a hundred billion FCFA destined for the execution of projects of general interests were embezzled within the framework of the organization of the festivities. By questioning the two officials in charge of managing the funds, the State of Gabon wants to have a clearer idea of the projects.

Since government launched the anti-corruption operation entitled in French, “Mains propres” several senior State functionaries and members of the ruling party have been remanded in custody. Others have been heard by the Audit Court including the former Prime Minister, Jean Eyéghé Ndong  on charges of alleged embezzlement of public funds. Enterprises have also reportedly been asked to reimburse the advance payment obtained for  infrastructure projects  that have not yet taken off the ground.
