Insecurity Heightens As Gunmen Attack Nigerian College

At least 15 people were reported dead and 35 injured in the Kano Teacher Training College attack.

Besides the continuous fighting between government forces and insurgence of the Islamic rebel group Boko Haram in northern Nigeria, insecurity has entered another phase this September with gunmen killing at least 15 people and injuring 35 others when they attacked the Federal Government Teachers’ Training College in Kano on September 17, 2014.

"We heard several shots from the gate area and after a few minutes, we heard an explosion at the theatre," Reuters reported citing Sansei Omar, who lectures in English at the Federal Government College and watched the attack from a neighboring building. He reportedly said that the attackers were wearing suits and were running and shooting everywhere.

Although no group claimed immediate responsibility for the attack, it is highly suspected that Boko Haram militants who have been attacking schools and Christian religious establishments in the area carried out the assault. This is because Boko Haram fighters have been opposing western education true to the translation of its name in Hausa language which means, “Western education is forbidden” and are fighting to carve out an Islamic State in Nigeria.

BBC reported that the attackers exchanged gunfire with Police outside the college before running inside. Citing a police officer, Reuters corroborated that two of the attackers died in the gunfire exchange.
