Tabaski Preparations Stepped up

There is overcrowding at sheep  and foodstuff markets, and tailors' workshops ahead of tomorrow’s feast.

Preparations towards the celebration of the feast of the Ram are taking central stage in the economic capital. Muslim faithful are seen in small groups in public places carrying out last minute purchases. The Sheep Market situated along the Douala International Airport road is overcrowded with sheep from Chad, Extreme North and the North West Region.

According to the Manager of the market, Aboubakar Adamou, 6,260 sheep entered the market last year and just 1,804 unsold sheep were recorded. As at 2:00pm yesterday, the market counted 3,040 sheep. Aboubakar said sheep are still expected later today and on the D-day.

The prices of sheep range between FCFA 40,000 and FCFA 150,000 which is slightly higher than last year. Dealers blame the price increase on the increase in transportation. Away from the sheep market, tailoring workshops are striving to cope with deadline. While young girls are busy embellishing their legs and hands with local tattoo, women are buying foodstuff for the celebration.
