Hunger Hits Over Three Million Chadians

The statistics were disclosed by a joint government, FAO and WFP report.

Some 3.1 million people are suffering from food security problems in Chad in 2014.  The Chadian government, Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP) recently carried out an evaluation of the food security situation in the country.

Peter Musoko, Assistant Representative of the World Food Programme in Chad said 800,000 people equally need food aid as food shortage that comes before the harvesting season has come earlier and is longer than in the previous years. He made the declaration on October 16, 2014 during commemorative activities of the World Food Day.

Only 2.6 million tonnes of cereals were produced in Chad during the 2013 to 2014  farming season, the Committee on Action for Food Security and Management of Crises (CASAGC) indicated in a report.  The Committee reportedly announced a preoccupying food security situation (almost a crisis) in Barh-el-Ghazel, Batha, Kanem, Lac and Wadi Fira; and emergency situations in Guéra, Hadjer Lamis, Salamat and N’Djemena.

Reports say a combat  plan has been proposed to give food and financial assistance to the population affected by food insecurity for the period spanning from May to September 2014. CASAGC had urged that more than FCFA 4 billion be raised at a faster pace to tackle the crisis and emergency food security problems.
