USA Republicans Win Senate, Congress

Midterm elections for Senators, Members of the House of Representatives and State Governors held on November 4, 2014.

The opposition Republican party in the United States of America (U.S.A.)  now has full control of the Senate, the House of Representatives (Congress) and has made more gains in the control of State Governors following the midterm elections that held on November 4, 2014. In the mid-terms, so-called because they fell half way into President Barack Obama's second four-year term in office, about one-third of the Senate (33 seats), the entire House of Representatives (435 seats) , 36 of 50 State Governors, and countless state and local offices were up for election.

Partial results published  late Tuesday indicated  that the Republicans now have 52 seats and is tipped to win more compared to 45 seats for the ruling Democrats in the 100-member Senate, BBC reported. The Republican Party also has 237 seats compared to 162 for the Democrats in the 435-member House of Representatives. The party won in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Montana, North Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia and is expected to make more gains as votes are counted in other states.

BBC further reported that in addition to seats the Republican party won from Democrats, it also retained seats in at least a dozen other States. In Louisiana, neither of the top two candidates gained 50 per cent of the vote, forcing a run-off election in early December, BBC said. When the new Congress will be sworn-in in January 2015, it will mark the first time the Republicans have held both the Senate and the House of Representatives since 2006.

They will now have the power to complicate, if not block completely, President Obama's agenda in the last two years of his tenure in the White House. Control of the Senate will also enable the Republicans to stymie Obama’s ability to name new federal judges, cabinet members and senior government officials.
