Michaelle Jean Designated Secretary-General Of La Francophonie

michaelle-jean-dakarThe former Stateswoman of Canada succeeds Abdou Diouf as the first female personality to head the International Organisation of La Francophonie.

Former Governor General of Canada, Michaelle Jean is the new Secretary-General of la Francophonie. The 57-year-old former Radio-Canada reporter was named yesterday, November 30, 2014 by consensus against four other candidates at the 15th summit of French-speaking nations in Dakar, Senegal. During her four-year mandate, she will oversee the organisation of 57 member states of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF).

The new Secretary General of OIF moved to Canada in the 1960s as she and her family fled the repressive regime of Haiti’s Francoise Duvalier. As a refugee from Haiti, she was raised in the town of Thetford Mines, Quebec. After receiving a number of university degrees, Jean worked as a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), as well as undertaking charity work, mostly in the field of assisting victims of domestic violence.

Jean received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian and Hispanic languages and literature from the University of Montreal, and, from 1984 to 1986, taught Italian Studies there, while completing her Master of Arts degree in Comparative Literature. She then went on with language and Literature studies at the University of Florence, the University of Perugia, and the Catholic University of Milan. Besides French and English, she is fluent in Spanish, Italian, and Haitian Creole, and can read Portuguese.

She served as Governor General of Canada between 2005 and 2010. Married to filmmaker Jean-Daniel Lafond with whom she has made several films, Michaelle Jean is a mother to Marie–Eden Lafond.  Jean was currently the Special Envoy for Haiti for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Chancellor of the University of Ottawa since 2012. Observers say the designation of Michaelle Jean at the helm of IOF gives a “new look” to La Francophonie and has sent a "powerful" message for equality. Jean has been described as a woman of vision who would provide fresh impetus for la Francophonie.michaelle-jean-dakar
