Refugee Camps Under Close Security Watch

The second semester conference of Regional Governors ended in Yaounde on Thursday, December 18, 2014.

As the country tackles serious security challenges on some of its borders, the authorities are also keeping an eye on happenings in the hinterland. Closing this year’s second semester Governors’ Conference at the Yaounde City Council Hall on Thursday, December 18, 2014, the Minister Delegate in the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, Jules Doret Ndongo, directed the Governors to keep close watch on refugee camps and the use of traditional weapons during cultural rites.

Jules Doret Ndongo ordered that greater security attention be paid to cross-border movements, drinking spots, venues of games of chance, as well as the ongoing Dixiades national games in Yaounde. On the other hand, the Governors were directed to ensure the implementation of road safety measures and personally supervise and coordinate polio vaccination campaigns to obtain expected results.

On the three-year Economic Contingency Plan recently ordered by President Paul Biya, the Minister Delegate reminded Regional Governors that the people were expecting much from the measures. Consequently, he charged them to ensure the proper and timely execution of selected projects as well as major infrastructure and other priority schemes. The regional executives were similarly beseeched to step up their facilitation of government’s decentralisation process, finalise work on the criteria for selecting traditional rulers in their areas and promptly settle outstanding administrative boundary disputes.

They are also expected to ensure hygiene and sanitation in towns and cities. While promising that government was exploring ways of resolving the discrepancies in the use of official outfits by Divisional Officers, Senior Divisional Officers and Governors, Minister Jules Doret Ndongo encouraged Governors to make proposals on how to go about the reforms.
